Do you know wich is the most used Elvis photo as art reference?

There are some Elvis photos that are used as reference much more than others. Maybe because this photo is so well known that it is used so much...

I'm always looking for lesser known pictures of Elvis. After just a few minutes searching in Google I found more than twenty works of art inspired by this photo. I'm not going to talk about quality, you can decide for yourself wich ones you like and wich ones you don't like...

Elvis in Charcoal #37, Happy Times

The first drawing in the second "Elvis in Charcoal" series is finished.
I enjoyed making this drawing. Most of my Elvis work and other art takes forever to finish.
Working in Charcoal is a lot faster and can be done in some lost hours.

Elvis in Charcoal series II

It's been a while since I made my last Weekly Elvis in Charcoal drawing. I missed it and decided to start Elvis in Charcoal series II.
Those drawings are easy to work on in a lost hour. I don't need to mix paint or look for certain colored pencils.  I don't know if I'm able to make one once a week but I will try.

Other Elvis Art, part 2: Joe Petruccio

Rock artists and sports heroes are portrayed in a whole new light when legendary artist Joe Petruccio puts his  paintbrush to canvas. He has earned himself such notable positions as serving as the Official Licensed Artist for  Graceland, Muhammad Ali and Frank Sinatra. He is also the official artist for Hard Rock Cafe and worked with MGM and  Sylvester Stallone back in 2006 to help create a series of paintings to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Stallone’s “Rocky.” His list of credits and commissions continues to grow almost daily.

Also worth a look is the Elvis journal where Joe created a year in the life of the king by revisiting his life a day at a time.

Remake of Elvis painting I made in 1980

A while ago I wrote that I was going to make a new version of a Elvis portrait I painted in 1980.
You can read it here. The new painting is on the easel now for quite some time, the under painting is finished now it's time to put on some color.  I'm planning on finishing it this month.
First I need to finish some commissioned Elvis drawings.

Other Elvis Art, part 1: Betty Harper

I "discovered" Betty a long time ago, long before there was internet, in 1979 when I found a copy of her book "Newly discovered drawings of Elvis Presley" at the American Book Centre in Amsterdam.
Until today the book has still a prominent spot on my bookshelf with art books between Hopper and Wyeth :-)
Back in the eighties Betty was a real inspiration, I loved all of her Elvis drawings.
Her "Jazz and Blues" and "Country and Western" drawings are also amazing. And she is also a accomplished photographer.
Betty is the Official Artist for Muhammad Ali Enterprises and the Official Artist for Elvis Presley Enterprises!

Elvis & Larry

Elvis & Larry, drawing 2014
This was an assingnment from the daughter of my biggest US fan. She send me two photos of Larry. I replaced the head of Lisa Marie in the original picture by that from Larry and did my best to change the girls clothes to boy clothes. After finishing the face of Larry I send her a jpg to find out if she was satisfied with the result and then I continued with the rest of the drawing.

Because of this drawing I got a new assignment I'm working on now.

This was a difficult drawing to make. I couldn't fine any good photos of Elvis wearing this suit.
I used a photo of Elvis from the same period wearing a different suit and a photo I took at Graceland of the Blue Rain suit as a reference for the stones, studs and belt.

Elvis on vinyl

1981 - with a part of my collection which I sold to buy a ZX Spectrum.

Late 80's - sold my collection without real reason somewhere in the 90's.

This post is not about art but it is about Elvis!
For the third time I started collecting Elvis on vinyl.
There are few things I regret, two of them are; selling my Elvis record collection in the 80's and selling my Elvis record collection in the 90's!
I limit my new collection to Singles, EP's and LP's issued during Elvis' lifetime. The fun part is finding nice items for small prices on Marktplaats, Ebay a.o.

The latest drawing in the "Jumpsuits & Stagewear" series is

Elvis in Charcoal e-book

The Elvis in Charcoal series is unusual: it’s done using charcoal and white chalk on coloured paper, which for me is a new, high-speed technique. I loved doing it. Each one is drawn in less than three hours, at the rate of one every week. As a result of all the positive reactions on Facebook (‘When’s the next one coming??’) I decided it would be a nice idea to put all the sketches together in a little book. Especially for everyone who - just like me - loves Elvis.

Also available as e-book!

New version of Elvis painting from 1980

When I was young the only thing I draw and painted were Elvis portraits. Some of them are still around, for example this one.
I decided to make a new version of this painting because I still like this photo a lot and to see how much progres I made in the past 34 years :-)
The size of the new painting will be 40 x 40 cm, oil on canvas.
